DIGITAL PUNCH CARDS

Digital punch cards for small business

A digital punch card is a stamp card that lives in the customer’s phone wallet instead of their pocket. The card you stamp at the counter, held on the customer’s phone — where they cannot leave it at home and you can see who is one visit from a reward. No app to install, on either side.

What changes when the card is digital?

A paper punch card is a private document. The customer knows how many stamps they have; you do not, unless they are standing in front of you with it. That single fact is what costs you the most, because the customer who is one visit from a free cut is the easiest message you will ever send, and on paper they are invisible.

A digital card is the same mechanic with the count on both sides of the counter. You see a list of who is close. They see progress on their lock screen without opening anything.

What did the research actually find?

The strongest evidence for punch cards is not that they exist but that how you frame them changes completion. In a field experiment at a car wash, 300 cards were handed out in two versions: an eight-stamp card, and a ten-stamp card with two stamps already applied. Both required eight more washes to earn the free one.

The part-filled cards were completed 34% of the time. The empty ones, 19%. Identical effort, nearly double the finish rate — because a card showing progress already made is harder to abandon than one showing none.

The full write-up and the source covers how to apply that without it reading as a gimmick, and the sizing question underneath it.

Without an app, on either side

Two things usually kill a loyalty scheme at a small business: the customer will not install an app for a stamp, and the owner will not run a till system to issue one. So neither is required here. You send a link. They tap once to keep it in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or they keep the link — all three show the same count and update themselves.

Your side is a phone browser. Scan the code, tap once, done. It records with no signal and syncs when you have one, because the places this gets used — a van, a basement, a field — do not reliably have coverage.

When is a stamp card the wrong tool?

A stamp card rewards frequency. If what you actually want is money before the work, a stamp card will not do it — that is a prepaid package, where the customer buys a block of visits up front and you draw it down. One pass can carry both at once, and you decide at the counter which a scan spends, but they solve different problems and it is worth being clear which one you have.

Questions people ask

What is a digital punch card?

The same idea as the card you stamp at the counter, held on the customer’s phone instead of in their wallet. Each visit adds a stamp; at a number you choose, they earn something. The difference is that both of you can see the count — you know who is one visit from a reward, which a paper card in someone’s pocket can never tell you.

Do customers need to download an app?

No, and you should be wary of any system that requires one. Asking someone to install an app to collect a stamp is a bigger request than the stamp is worth. Returnpass gives them a link; they can add it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet in one tap, or just keep the link. All three work the same.

How many stamps should a card need?

It depends on how often people visit. A reward roughly a month or two out is close enough to aim at. The trap is a card so long that nobody finishes — an unfinished card is worse than no card, because it is a promise you made and they gave up on.

Does starting the card part-filled really work?

It has been measured. In a car-wash field experiment, one group got an eight-stamp card and another got a ten-stamp card with two already stamped. Both needed eight more washes. The part-filled group finished 34% of the time against 19% for the empty card — the same work, framed as progress already made.

What stops someone collecting stamps they did not earn?

A stamp is added by you, from your own signed-in dashboard, after you scan their code. Nobody can add one to their own card. Every entry is written to an append-only ledger with a time on it, so if a count is ever questioned you can see exactly what happened and when — including anything a member of staff reversed.

Is a digital card better than paper?

Paper is cheaper and it works, so be honest about the trade. Digital wins on three specific things: it cannot be left at home, you can see who is close to a reward, and the count is authoritative rather than a matter of whose memory. If none of those matter to you, keep the stamp.
